Tend my Garden

Project Type : Mobile App (ONGOING)
Category : UX Design and Research
Duration : 1 month
Role : Product Designer

Overview

Tend My Garden is a paid cannabis garden, where customers can either come and take care of their own plants, pay extra to have them taken care of and in the process learn more about growing marijuana. I was asked to make simple mock-ups for their app. My clients needed something that allowed their customers to check their plant's progress, receive reports about it's growth, and access additional account service.

Main Objectives

Creating a one-page overview of all plant progresses

My clients wanted a compelling Home page/Plant summary page.

Deciding on information hierarchy/Creating an app that guides new growers through the process

My clients had a good idea about the type of information they wanted to convey, but they didn't know how to express it in a way that a beginner grower could easily comprehend. Basically, we were creating an interactive how-to-guide along with the status monitor.

Initial Research

Non-directed one-on-one interviews

Instead of finding out what the potential users knew about growing cannabis, I wanted to find out where the gaps in their knowledge was. I thought a less direct line of questioning would achieve this.

Task Analysis

I broke down the different tasks from my interview/as well as my discussions with my clients. I paired these with the information that my clients wanted to show the users.

Project Insights

Those with growing experience had a lot of questions about what they can and can't control for themselves. For example: would they be able to control the temperature, the type of soil they use, perhaps even the humidity? The fun part for experienced growers is in experimenting on their strains by changing the grow conditions ever so slightly. Whatever they can control, we needed to show prominently on the app.

With beginner growers, they were understandably apprehensive about a level of control over their plants, and were inquisitive about whether "guides" and "classes or something" were to be offered. I think one explanation that put them at ease, was that with the health of their plants guaranteed by staff, they could have control over things that handled the "customizing" of the plant.

LOW-FIDELITY MOCKUPS

We ended up with the following low fidelity mock-ups. As well as using the information I gleaned from my own research, I took inspiration from the apps Flo and Forest. Flo, for it's user friendly tracking and knowledge base. Forest, the focuss app for it's visualization.
